Message lower hex shaped one only increases idle when the engine is under load like AC etc.
To test the AAC on the IACV unit, just touch 12 volts + and - to it. If it doesn't click it's either gummed up inside the casting or it's dead. When mine went bad it idled like crap. Another way to test it is once your engine is warm, unplug the AAC, set the idle to 650 and plug it back in. It should immediately rise to about 750, if not same thing, dirty or dead.
Also test the Coolant Temp Sensor (or fouled connector) as if it's out of spec it'll do that too.
